If you see an emergency, any Gerber employee is allowed to activate the appropriate alarm and exit the building if safe to do so. Site-specific protocol and procedures should be followed and employees are to become familiar with Gerber’s Emergency Action Plan.

  • Emergency Response Push Buttons: All employees are authorized to notify outside emergency responders via emergency push buttons (where applicable) and to place 911 calls. There are nine (9) emergency response button stations throughout the Tolland facility. In the case of a medical emergency, calling 911 is preferred in order to have a two-way dialogue with emergency staff. Using the phone also alerts internal responders to ensure EMTs are flagged to the right location and can access the building. NOTE: pushing a Police or Medical call button will notify the local 911 dispatch station of an emergency, but WILL NOT initiate the audible alarm.

  • Fire Alarm Pull Stations: Fire alarm pull stations are located adjacent to most exit doorways. If an emergency arises where you need to evacuate, pulling an alarm will sound Gerber’s audible evacuation alarm and will notify the local 911 dispatch center of an emergency at Gerber.

  • Medical Emergency: If you or a co-worker appear to be in a medical emergency, please adhere to these guidelines:

  • Call 911: Your first call should be directly to 911 from a land-line phone before locating anyone to assist, unless basic first-aid is the obvious remedy. The company phone system automatically emails and texts Gerber first responders. This alert includes where the call was placed.

  • If you call from a cell phone, the Gerber first responders will not automatically be notified. Contact one of the Gerber First Responders.

  • Send a flagger: Send an employee outside to flag down the emergency vehicles because facilities can be large and confusing. Municipal EMTs will typically report to the Receiving Department.

First Aid and CPR

Our Tolland office has a first aid team who can assist and respond to emergencies requiring medical attention. First Aiders and/or EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) may either administer treatment or refer the injured person to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Emergency notification procedures are posted at bulletin boards.

If in doubt, dial 911. Do not drive yourself or other employees to the hospital. In a less serious first aid emergency, call a Gerber First Aid Responder.

Select personnel may be trained in CPR and Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) and may voluntarily assist with emergencies. Employees should become familiar with the location of AED and First Aid stations within the facility. link to map. Employees with previous first aid experience who wish to join the first aid team should contact the Director Environmental Health and Safety.
